All subwoofers need an external power source. This external power source is normally an aftermarket amplifier. While some aftermarket radios do have the ability to connect subwoofers directly, the output of the radio is not enough to produce immersive sound.
When selecting your subwoofer amplifier combo you want to make sure the enclosure you select (sealed, ported or bandpass) can accommodate the amount and size of the subwoofers you plan to install. While the overall size of the subwoofer must fit into the box, the subwoofer will also displace air as it operates. The subwoofer needs an enclosure where it can safely and properly displace the correct amount of air. Subwoofers will include there minimum and maximum operating dimensions in cubic feet. The enclosure you select must also follow these requirements to ensure your subwoofer is not damaged during operation and sounds it’s best. Lastly if you are expecting to shake the block with your bass you will want to triple check your subwoofers RMS power handling rating and the technology powering the woofer, if not you can end up disappointed with your investment.
